3 Of The Most Anticipated Games And Apps Coming Out This Year (2020 List)

As ever, there are tons of exciting video games coming out thick and fast each week and month, so much so that it’s sometimes too hard to keep track of them all. Wondering what some of the most anticipated games coming out this year are, across different platforms? To help get you excited, here are three major picks on most people’s radars at the moment.

Cyberpunk 2077 – PC, PS4, Xbox One, Stadia

The next big hallmark RPG from Polish developer CD Projekt, the visionaries behind The Witcher III: Wild Hunt – a game that has won countless awards and accolades – Cyberpunk 2077 switches things up from the typical medieval locales that we’re used to, in favour of a Blade Runner/Akira-esque world. Exploring Night City, among many other locations in this expansive futuristic world, you’ll once again have massive amounts of agency over your character’s decisions, skills, and powers, and will be able to tackle situations in a multitude of different ways.

If that wasn’t enough, CD Projekt announced at E3 last year that the game would star none other than John Wick Star Keanu Reeves as Johnny Silverhand, your character’s guide and a main part of the plot throughout. What significance Reeves’ role in the massive RPG is yet to be revealed, but whatever he does, he’s sure to do it in style.

Originally slated for an April launch, Cyberpunk 2077 has now been unfortunately delayed until September this year, and so fans will have to wait a few more months to get their hands on this RPG of the future.

The Last of Us Part II – PS4

The sequel to what many regard as one of the best games of all time, let alone one of the best of the PlayStation 3 era, The Last of Us Part II centres around 19-year old Ellie, surviving in a quite horrible post-apocalyptic United States.

The Developer – The Last of Us creators Naughty Dog have a storied history with the PlayStation console, having created some of the top-selling and rated games for each respective system. Their star-studded backlog includes the original Crash Bandicoot trilogy for the PlayStation, the Jak & Daxter series on the PlayStation 2, and, of course, the Last of Us.

Originally slated for release this month, The Last of Us Part II needs a few more months in the development oven before it’ll be ready, and will be on our PlayStations on May 29th.

Did you know? – Delays are extremely common in the games industry today, and video game crunch to get things done is becoming a growing concern. Many will already know the famous quote from Shigeru Miyamoto dating back to the N64 era, that “A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad”, and while a bit old at this point, it’s perhaps more relevant than ever. If you want to learn more about game development, Abstraction, a developer with over 12 years of experience and a bunch of different platform titles under their belt, have a bunch of different resources available on their site.

Half-Life: Alyx – PC (Virtual Reality)

Enjoying massive success with their game platform Steam, many thought that’s Valve’s mainstream developer days were behind them, but after 12 long years without a Half-Life game, we’re now on the brink of a brand new adventure that exclusively uses Virtual Reality. Being a prequel centred around Alyx Vance prior to the events of Half Life 2’s cliffhanger ending, who knows whether we’ll get any foreshadowing or further clarity on the series’ lore, but from the gameplay we’ve seen it looks to be another brilliant and revolutionary entry in the series.

Accompanying the launch of what is sure to be VR’s killer-app, akin to what Super Mario 64 was for 3D platforming (and 3D gaming in general, for that matter), journalist and known industry veteran Geoff Keighley will also be releasing a chronicling of the development process entitled ‘The Final Hours of Half-Life: Alyx’. This has become a tradition with Keighley at Valve, as he’s been documenting the production of their games since the original Half-Life back in 1998. No doubt it will provide an insightful and interesting behind-the-scenes look at game development, and what’s been going on at the studio all this time. Valve play their cards very close to their chest, mind you, so no doubt they won’t reveal all of their secrets!

Half-Life: Alyx releases on Windows on March 23rd. Half-Life fans have waited long enough for this one, but there isn’t much longer to go! Now we just need to scrape the cash together for a good enough PC to be able to run it…
