Everyone remembers the first day that they set foot onto the planes of Gielinor, or Runescape, as we mere mortals have nicknamed it. Armed with nothing but a wooden sword and shield, and a heart full of determination, we began our journey. Killing goblins and doing quests, we roamed the lands, we upgraded our wooden sword to a mighty iron one, our shield was now a kite shield, we even had a helmet and some armour.
Then we met other players, and they walked around with shining armour and vicious-looking swords. Envy is a powerful thing, we wanted one, and we wanted one bad. So, we made our way to the place where a man can purchase anything… for the right price of course. The Grand Exchange. We were determined to purchase that same sword with the money we had saved from our quests. We found the NPC responsible for sourcing anything an adventurer could ask for, and we asked him how much the sword was. He responded with the price and our hearts… well, our hearts were shattered. It would take several years of killing goblins and doing quests to afford that incredible sword.
If this has ever been you, we relate. Unless you have the potential to spend hours upon hours playing your favourite game, you might often feel like you run into a currency wall. Most MMORPGs require huge amounts of time and energy in order for you to farm up your gold. Luckily for you, there is an easier way to obtain the in-game currency you need to really enjoy the game to the fullest. For those of us who would prefer to make our money the old fashioned way, there are a number of ways to go about it. Here are 2 of the many methods you could use and how much you can make by following them.
Cowhides
If you are a free player, unfortunately, you are somewhat limited on your earning potential. The best method you have available to you is to tan cowhides. Here are the steps you need to follow to do so.
Firstly, spend whatever money you have saved up on cowhides in the Grand Exchange, leaving yourself with at least 1 coin per cowhide left over. Next, you should head to the tannery in Al Kharid. Pay the tanner to tan all of the cowhides in your inventory, and this will turn them into soft leather. The cost for that is 1 coin per hide. Finally, you run back to the Grand Exchange and sell your hides there for around 25-30 coins more then you paid for each hide.
Although the rate fluctuates, you should be able to earn at least 35k+ an hour using this method.
Spinning Flax
If you are a paid member, one of the easiest ways to make money is to spin flax. For this, you need to have level 10 crafting and at least 15k gold. If you haven’t quite reached 15k gold yet, I suggest you use the cowhide method above.
To make money spinning flax, you buy flax from the GE, and then you head to a spinning wheel. The best spinning wheel, in my opinion, is the one in Lumbridge.
Spin your flax into bowstrings and then sell them at the GE. The price of one flax tends to be around 3-5 coins on the GE, one bowstring however, sells for 80-120 depending on the demand.
One hour’s work should net you around 130k worth of gold, and as an added benefit, your crafting skill gets trained too.
Cost vs. Time
As a gamer, playing a game the way it was meant to be played really appeals to me in most cases. As an adult-gamer, however, I want to have as much fun as possible in the short amount of time that I have allocated for gaming.
I will break it down to further explain what I mean.
After work, the gym, and eating, I have around 2-3 hours of gaming time each day.
That equates to 14-21 hours a week.
As a paid member, I would probably employ the flax spinning method to grind money.
If I did this for every hour I was on the game during the week, my earnings would look like this.
21x 130k = 2.73M gold. Or around 37.5 Hours for 5m.
On a good gold-buying site like Probemas, the cost per million of gold is around £0.52
So for £2.60 (Which is their minimum purchase), I could purchase 5M gold from them instantly.
The minimum wage where I live in England is £8.21 an hour. The average working week is 37.5 hours.
That means that in a full working week of playing Runescape and grinding money, I would earn £2.60 worth of gold.
A full working week at minimum wage would earn me £309.21.
Conclusion <
As a modern gamer, I want to spend as much time as possible, really enjoying the game. I want to complete quests and learn the lore and engage in massive challenging boss fights. What I do not want to do is to spend hours upon hours of my life, grinding for the money to do so. If you are a purist, I tip my hat to you. If you follow the methods above, you will be able to earn enough money to play the game. But for me, I will stick to purchasing my gold online, from a reputable source, so I can buy that shiny vicious sword that I wanted from the beginning, all those years ago.
