Why Web Security Is So Important for Small Businesses

As the internet landscape morphs and evolves, cyber threats change with it – often eclipsing known internet protections to wreak havoc on business and private internet users. Keeping up with these cyber-attacks is a challenge that any businesses have difficulty with, as the complexity and unpredictability of the attacks themselves render any precautionary steps moot in many cases. It is possible to avoid many basic attacks, particularly if you’re savvy when it comes to cyber security, but where does that leave the rest of us? In this article, we take a look at why paying close attention to web security is one of the most important things you can do in our modern internet age.

Where do you start with website security?

Trying to find the best website security possible is actually much simpler in theory than in action – there are a considerable number of things to think about as a small business, particularly if you’re on a budget (and still have sensitive information to manage). Generally, web security is a necessity in order to prevent hackers and cyber-thieves from accessing sensitive information and disrupting services. One of the most common mistakes that businesses can make is to assume that their business is too small to target – this is far from the truth, as any business that leaves an open back door allows for a thief to make money, even if it’s a small amount. Thankfully, there are a few basics to know to help business owners know that there is some kind of protection in place for their website. It’s not actually just about shelling out for expensive software and letting it do its thing – the most important step in maintaining cyber security is awareness of potential weaknesses.

Easy tips to ensure better cyber security

The best place to start with cyber security is with something as simple as ensuring your password is strong. A strong password makes it much easier for cyber criminals to bypass security, despite it being such an overlooked thing by so many people. To prevent passwords being cracked easily, it is recommended that passwords be at least 8 characters long and feature a combination of upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols to ensure the most diversity possible. The next thing you can do is enable two-factor authorisation. Many people might be familiar with services like Google and banking implementing this, as when you access your device from another location you will receive a notification. If this is applied to your own website, you can also prevent others from accessing your website. Finally, be very careful when you’re logging into a website and you find that it isn’t secured. Unsecured websites (websites lacking the HTTPS element at the start of the address) can potentially be accessed and monitored by other people, making things like banking information highly vulnerable.

Security online isn’t as difficult as you might think

Although web security does put many people at risk, it’s often due to their perception of web security being overcomplicated. At the end of the day, users not implementing some very simple precautionary security measures are the ones most at risk – even something as simple as strengthening your password and changing it regularly can make all of the difference in the world.
