The Eating Essentials: A Guide to Downsizing Your Kitchen

Moving to a smaller kitchen space can be a difficult task. Over time, you will accumulate a lot of gadgets, pots, pans, dishware, crockery and other tools in your kitchen. When you have a lot of storage space available, this is never really an issue. However, when the time comes to downsize your kitchen and move all of your stuff into a smaller space, it can suddenly become a big problem.

If you take the right approach when downsizing your kitchen, however, you can ensure that it is as stress-free an experience as possible. Although it may seem like an impossible task at first, with a little planning and some careful decision-making, you can ensure that you succeed with your downsizing efforts.

Let’s take a look at a few simple tips to help you downsize your kitchen successfully so you can move into your new kitchen space fully prepared.

Start With Appliances

Appliances can accumulate quickly over time, and in most cases, you probably do not use them all very often. Whilst people tend to use their microwave on a daily basis, for example, you could have an old bread maker and slow cooker taking up space in your cabinets that have been gathering dust for years. Take some time to go through your appliances and be honest with yourself about what you use and what you don’t. If you haven’t used something in the last month, it’s probably time to let it go. Starting with these larger items will help you to begin your downsizing plan by making a big dent.

Remove Multiple Items

Most kitchens are full of multiple items that have the exact same use. While you will need multiple plates and bowls, you probably don’t need three graters. Look through your things and identify what unnecessary multiples are lying around your kitchen. Keep the best one and either sell, donate or throw out whatever is left. This will help you to reduce the number of items in your kitchen quickly.

Reconsider Your Gadgets

Kitchen gadgets come in all sorts of shapes and sizes nowadays, with a device for just about everything. Most people either love or hate kitchen gadgets, and if you fall into the first category, chances are you will have accumulated quite a few single-use kitchen toys. Garlic presses, poached egg makers, avocado slicers, lemon juicers and other gadgets that can be used for just one job can often be replaced by a tool that can do that job and more. Getting rid of unnecessary gadgets will help you to declutter your kitchen quickly and make it easier for you to downsize.

Choose The Right Storage Solutions

Moving to a smaller kitchen space, you will naturally have less storage space available. However, with a little thought and planning, you can use creative storage solutions that will allow you to maximise the use of your new space. Hanging storage, wall storage, hooks, rails and open shelving can give you more space to store what you just can’t get rid of. Using the right storage in your new space will make the downsizing process much easier.

Ensure Your Kitchen Downsizing Goes Smoothly

Of all the rooms in your home, the one that tends to accumulate the most things in it over time is the kitchen. From appliances to dishware, gadgets, recipe lists, food items and more, there is a never-ending list of items that you will need to consider when you are downsizing your kitchen. Take the time to consider what you use regularly and keep those items that will benefit you the most in your new kitchen space. With a considered and methodical approach to your kitchen downsizing efforts, you can be sure that everything goes as smoothly as possible.
