Are you interested in purchasing a mountain bike? You probably have discovered that your old rusty bike in the back of your garage does not fit the task anymore. While mountain biking has always had its fans, its popularity has grown tremendously over the past few years. This growth has been achieved since people have become more stressed and busier and are seeking ways to help them relax.

On the other hand, other individuals have become more health conscious and thus take it as a good exercise. Other people seek soothing fun to do with their spouses or friends when the weather is good. However, with the complexity of mountain bikes nowadays, you may not know where to start. Build

When you visit a bike store online or physically, you will notice that the prices vary with different options. This is usually influenced by the bike’s build and components, such as shifters, gears, handlebars, and brakes that allow the bike to work. A pricier build kit will likely have better components that are often more durable and lightweight. The primary build components influencing the bike’s price include materials and suspension.

  • Frame Material: Bikes can be made from several materials, but the most common ones include carbon fiber and aluminum alloy. The material used to build a bike significantly influences its price, durability, and weight. Aluminum is more common, following its durability and reduced price. On the other hand, carbon fiber is popular following its lightweight: it will cost you more.
  • Suspension: the two main suspension types to consider when purchasing a mountain bike include full and hardtail suspension. Hardtails are mostly found on XC bikes, and they include a rear-end without suspension linked with a suspension fork that enables absorption of impact on mellow trails. On the other hand, a complete suspension mountain bike includes a rear and front shock, offering a smoother ride and impact absorption. If you intend to climb hills, a full suspension may not be ideal, making the task more difficult.

Fit

Choosing a mountain bike that fits you right is crucial. Fortunately, mountain bike sizes can be small, medium, or large. It is important to note that most mountain bike focuses on a shallow stand-over height; thus, standing over the bike flat-footed might not work. If you want to gain more control or the ability to whip your bike around, sizing down might be helpful. In contrast, sizing up is necessary if you want a more stable ride or a giant torso.

Wheel Size

This is an essential factor that should not be overlooked. Mountain bike wheel sizes include 26, 27.5, and 29 inches. Larger wheels are ideal if your trail has many obstacles, allowing you to roll over them easily. However, even though larger wheels are good or more extensive terrains, they are tougher to handle. You can take 27.5 inches to strike a nice balance.

Bike Style

What kind of a ride are you going to take? The type of your ride will highly influence the style of mountain bike you select. Primarily, there are four main categories of mountain bikes, and they include the following.

  • Trail-this is one of the most versatile styles of mountain bike styles. This is because they do it all since they can hold onto their own on the climbs and descents. This bike is perfect for any type of terrain.
  • Cross-country (XC)- these bikes are designed for speed and efficiency; hence they are pedal-focused powerhouses. Cross-country bikes usually have reduced cushion in their suspension to increase efficiency and decrease weight.
  • Downhill– these bikes are designed for downhill as they are burly and built to move on steep areas with jumps and high speeds. This is not your ideal bike if you plan to go up a hill.
  • All mountain/ Enduro- this category includes bikes that are uphill-friendly and more downhill-focused at the same time. However, following their downhill orientation, these bikes will require you to pedal more.

Accessories

While most people might overlook this tip, it is essential to consider how your mountain bike is accessorized. The accessories significantly contribute to making your ride more fun and comfortable. Besides, climbing a hill is already tiresome, so you want a bike that will ease the journey. Therefore, focus on the areas that come into contact with your body to avoid pain or discomfort. One of the points you should address is your backside. You can in an appropriate pair of mountain bike shorts and chamois-a padded liner shorts. Also, you can add gloves to protect your hands and prevent excess sweating when riding.

In conclusion, your trail’s terrain will highly influence the type of mountain bike you choose. If you find it challenging to select an appropriate bike, you can seek help from professionals who are best equipped with enough knowledge.
